Follow the road north from the Greyhound before turning left up through the woods and along the steep walk to the Bridgewater monument. It takes us along parts of The Ridgeway National Trail and out to the famous viewpoint at Ivinghoe Beacon. Take this path which will lead you back to the car park alongside Vicarage Lane. Follow the road uphill until you come across the disused railway station called Wheathampstead station platform. Walkers are able to choose their own routes that range from 1.5 to 4.5 miles, these are usually covered in bluebells throughout the spring and summer months. Cross the bridge and follow round to the right where it joins the B197 London Road on Mardley Hill. Once at the lane turn right with the hedgerows and fields to your left. It is not, however, an easy walk, lasting about two hours at more than seven miles, with periods of uphill ascent. Continue east down the river and onto Bridleway nine, until you reach Cold Christmas Lane. Keep walking and go over a footbridge until you reach a left turn. Follow this, where you will come across a set of steps to Sheepcote Lane. Take this path and soon you will reach a raised wooden bridge that leads out onto open parkland where you can veer left to return to the path by the lake. The Lea Valley Walk takes you on a route along the Lee Navigation towpath, from Waltham Abbey to the Thames at Limehouse Basin. Go through this gate and continue through Brick Kiln Wood with the brook running to your left and the wood on the right. Take the footpath on your right immediately before The Woodman Inn (North Mymms footpath seven), to visit the swallow holes. If the route is not clear (or muddy) return to Bradmore Lane and continue heading downhill until just after the second bend when you will see a footpath sign on your right. Start at the Wheathampstead East Lane car park and turn right onto East Lane. Head northwest and you will find yourself walking through farmland and woodland before arriving in Flaunden. This Hertfordshire walk starts from the free car park next to the public toilets along the B651 (grid Ref TL169104). Keep the hedge and brook to your left and continue. When you reach a metal gate, go through and continue along the path until you reach an underpass on the right. Leave Hatfield station and cross the road and head east down Arm and Sword Lane until you reach Bradmore Lane, where you turn left until you reach a footpath on the right through a field. Took us 3.5hours. Unfortunately no one has marked the line but it's pretty amazing to know that you're standing on it.
